Fellow Rossoneri icon Maldini is a co-owner of the club and Nesta discussed taking on the job and the challenges he has faced so far in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.

“After 10 minutes it was all done,” he said.

“For me Paolo is like a brother. For four months we’ve gone around everywhere, we learned all about football in the USA, starting from the universities and colleges.

“I’ve lived in Miami for three years now, so starting here is nice for me and my family.

“Even though starting in a new country, on a different level, could be difficult, I’ll try to pass on my experience to the players.

“The owners, Silva and Maldini, want to win straight away: it doesn’t matter that it’s the first year, that’s what they want and we’ll try to achieve it.

“When you come to the USA you must change mentality, because it’s different here, they don’t have the base that there is in Italy for example, and it’s complicated to change technique and tactics.

“For us you have the passion for football inside you; here it comes from college where there’s basketball, American football, baseball…

“I don’t think they have much passion for football, but we must try to build it.

“Beckham? He’s welcome. Don’t New York and Los Angeles have two teams? I think Miami is big enough. Beckham needs two years to start, we must use that time to build something interesting.

“It’s not simple because it’s another job. Like I said, doing it in a country that isn’t yours wasn’t easy. Here there’s a different football philosophy, another language, but although in practice I’ve yet to start I can already say that we’re talking about a great experience.”
