The game of the night was undoubtedly in Seville, where Spain went head-to-head with Germany for the top of Group 4, and achieved it in quite extraordinary fashion.

Juventus striker Morata began the rout with a header at the back post, then saw yet another goal ruled offside, this one a decision that might’ve been overturned if VAR had been available.

Between club and international games, Morata has been involved in 10 goals in 11 matches this season, scoring seven and assisting three.

Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz was not in the starting XI, but came on for injured Sergio Canales just 12 minutes in.

Ferran Torres took centre-stage with a hat-trick, while Rodri and late on Mikel Oyarzabal also found the net in a humiliating 6-0 thrashing.

This represents Germany’s worst ever competitive defeat and their worst since a 6-0 friendly against Austria in 1931.

In the same group, Ukraine’s match against Switzerland was called off due to an outbreak of COVID-19 cases, including Atalanta forward Ruslan Malinovskyi.

Dejan Kulusevski’s Sweden had taken an early lead in France with Viktor Claessen, but an Olivier Giroud brace and Benjamin Pavard goal turned it around for Adrien Rabiot’s Bleus.

Robin Quaison got a late consolation for 3-2, but as Sweden sent Roma-owned Robin Olsen forward for the final free kick, it left an open goal for Kingsley Coman to score 4-2 on the counter.

There were several Serie A players in action during Croatia 2-3 Portugal, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Mario Rui, Mario Pasalic and Ivan Perisic.

Former Inter midfielder Mateo Kovacic opened the scoring, but Cagliari player Marko Rog saw red for a second yellow card as he brought down Ronaldo on 51 minutes.

Portugal took advantage of the extra man, turning the game around through Ruben Dias – getting on the end of a parried Ronaldo free kick – and Joao Felix with some suspicions of handball.

However, despite being down to 10 men, Croatia still got it back to 2-2 with Kovacic’s second of the game.

Portugal only managed to win it 3-2 at the 90th minute when goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic horribly fumbled a corner, allowing Ruben Dias to fire in the loose ball.

France and Spain will therefore be in the Nations League Final Four tournament, with Italy hoping to join them tomorrow.
