Let’s take a more in-depth look at the Partenopei’s rivals in Group C.
Paris Saint-Germain
Country: France
Best Champions League/European Cup result: Quarter-finals [2015-16]
What you need to know: PSG exited last year’s competition in the Round of 16 against the eventual winners Real Madrid. This year, they hope the addition of Gianluigi Buffon and the appointal of Thomas Tuchel as manager can propel them deeper into the competition than they’ve ever been before.
Also, this will be Cavani’s first return to the Stadio San Paolo since PSG’s friendly with Napoli in 2014.
Previous meeting: Napoli 1-2 PSG [2014 Friendly]
Liverpool
Country: England
Best Champions League/European Cup result: Winners [2005]
What you need to know: The Reds are entering this year’s Champions League as runners-up. Klopp’s men shocked many last season when they had a stellar run to the UCL Final, only to have their dreams crushed by Real Madrid. Mohamed Salah exited the final early after a nasty tackle from Sergio Ramos injured the Egyptian winger, and many wonder how things would’ve turned out if Salah had been able to play the whole game.
Liverpool are currently unbeaten in the Premier League and their front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Mohamed Salah are looking to wreak havoc upon each of their UCL opponents.
Previous meeting: Liverpool 5-0 Napoli [2018 Friendly]
Red Star Belgrade
Country: Serbia
Best Champions League/European Cup result: European Cup Winners [1991]
What you need to know: This will be Red Star Belgrade’s first appearance in the modern day UEFA Champions League (they competed in the 1991-92 competition a year prior to the name change). They beat Spartaks Jurmala (Latvia), FK Suduva (Lithuania), Spartak Trnava (Slovakia), and Red Bull Salzburg (Austria) to progress to the group stages.
Red Star fans are known to be wildly passionate, so playing in Serbia will be no easy feat.
