Napoli to end 22 years of Juventus, Inter and Milan Serie A domination

Juventus, Inter and Milan have between them won 74 Serie A titles, but with Napoli about to clinch their third, it will be the first time in 22 years that none of the big three will be Champions of Italy.

The Partenopei will mathematically secure the Scudetto if they beat Salernitana tomorrow and Lazio also fail to pick up a victory away to Inter.

It’ll represent their third Scudetto after 1986-87 and 1989-90, both of which were achieved with Diego Armando Maradona in the squad.

However, looking at the bigger picture, the last time anyone other than Inter, Juve or Milan was crowned Champions of Italy was Roma all the way back in 2000-01.

Since then, Juventus took the title 11 times (unofficially 13, as two were revoked by the Calciopoli ruling), Inter six and Milan on three occasions.

The degree to which the big three dominated the Serie A record books cannot be underestimated, as since the last time Napoli took the title in 1989-90, the only clubs to have interrupted the hegemony are Sampdoria in 1990-91, Lazio in 1999-2000 and Roma in 2000-01.
