Napoli’s head of operations has warned the club is “embarrassed by the attitude of the council” ahead of a UEFA inspection, as restructuring work on the San Paolo is delayed again.
“Our stadium is on a warning, so behaviour like lighting flares, using laser pens and sitting on the yellow staircases will mean our next game will be behind closed doors,” head of operations Alessandro Formisano told Radio Marte.
“Today the UEFA inspection began to prepare the protocols for an international game. In December they had already alerted us and the local council to 25 points that need to be worked on.
“For the last six weeks we have been urging the council to intervene. We are even ready to anticipate funds to make sure the work is carried out in time, then taking it off the next annual payment we use to rent the stadium.”
The majority of Italian clubs do not own the stadiums, as they only rent them from the local council and are not responsible for the day-to-day maintenance.
“We are embarrassed by the attitude of the council, because there is urgent work the council needs to do on the stadium, but it is not happening and we haven’t even received any communication on the situation.
“Not respecting these directives means UEFA are able to stop Napoli playing at the San Paolo. You can only imagine what would happen there.
“I am convinced the anomaly is down to red tape, but the situation needs to be dealt with quickly because the work that has to be done is not a small matter.”
