Napoli seem to have resolved their goalkeeper crisis with reports they have agreed a new contract with Alex Meret and are putting faith in him.

There had been concerns after a season in which David Ospina was largely first choice for coach Luciano Spalletti, especially after some costly Meret howlers.

However, with Ospina out of contract from June 30, there were suggestions Napoli were looking for another goalkeeper and could also sell Meret.

His current deal only runs to June 2023 and he hasn’t made the progress expected after his €26m move from Udinese in 2018.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Napoli have now agreed terms on a new contract with Meret to 2027.

The shot-stopper is 25 years old and has only two senior caps for Italy under his belt.

Among the problems that Spalletti has with Meret is the fact he’s not strong at playing out from the back and prone to errors with his feet.

The Italian made only 15 competitive appearances for Napoli this season, conceding 23 goals.

  1. I lost faith in Meret unfortunately. He made costly mistakes and doesn’t command his team like a real keeper does.
