Napoli could keep Andrea Petagna after all, so Sampdoria are asking Sassuolo for Francesco Caputo, promoting Gianluca Scamacca to first choice for the Neroverdi.

Sky Sport Italia report there is a domino effect going on in Serie A during the final hours of the summer transfer session.

The deadline is at 19.00 UK time (20.00 in Italy).

Petagna had been on the verge of joining Sampdoria on loan and the paperwork had been drawn up, merely waiting for Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis to give the all-clear.

However, he has not given a response and now seems ready to keep the centre-forward who came off the bench to score the winner against Genoa at the weekend.

Instead, Sky Sport Italia, Sportitalia and Tuttomercatoweb all report that Sassuolo are meeting with Sampdoria directors this evening.

Transfer news, deadline day: rumours and done deals live

They are trying to rush through a possible transfer for centre-forward Ciccio Caputo to join Samp.

It would be a surprise for the 34-year-old, who scored 32 Serie A goals over the last two seasons, along with 15 assists.

This would also fit in with Sassuolo’s desire to keep Scamacca, promoting him and Giacomo Raspadori to first-choice status upfront.

Gregoire Defrel, who already had a loan at Sampdoria, is also being discussed during this meeting on deadline day.

  1. I think that’s also something to do with Ciccio wanting to get back into the Italy camp. We’d welcome him at Samp. They’d have probably won at Sass if they’d had more upfront to support Quags!
