Reports in Italy claim Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis could face a trial over suspected false accounting in the deal to sign Victor Osimhen from Lille in 2020.

La Repubblica, ANSA and Sky Sport Italia claim Rome magistrates have ended an investigation over alleged false accounting involving Napoli president and owner De Laurentiis but according to Repubblica, other members of the club are under investigation for the deal that brought Nigerian star striker Osimhen to the Stadio Maradona in 2020.

Osimhen joined Napoli in a €71m deal from Lille, but the Serie A giants only paid €50m cash and the remaining €21m was covered by four largely unknown players included in a swap deal: Greek goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis, plus Luigi Liguori, Claudio Manzi and Ciro Palmieri.

ANSA claims Rome prosecutors have informed De Laurentiis about the end of the investigation, so the Partenopei owner could now face a trial.

Osimhen contributed to Napoli’s first Serie A title in 33 years last term, scoring 26 league goals.

He has recently signed a contract extension with the Partenopei until June 2026.
