Napoli have reportedly opened talks with Sheffield United to sign Sander Berge but the midfielder’s price tag is too high for the Azzurri.

New Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti wants a new central midfielder, but the Azzurri may need to sign two of them if Fabian Ruiz leaves the Stadio Maradona in the summer.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli are monitoring three players at the moment. Sander Berge (Sheffield United), Toma Basic (Bordeaux) and Morten Thorsby (Sampdoria) are on the Partenopei’s radars and the Azzurri have opened talks with the Premier League side over a possible move for the Norway international.

Sheffield informed Napoli they can sell Berge for a fee between €12m and €16m, but the Serie A side are not open to matching the Premier League side’s economic demands.

Berge scored one goal in 16 appearances with Sheffield last season and Napoli are open to signing the player with a different formula, possibly on loan with an option to buy. Despite that, talks between the two clubs are ongoing.

Berge is reported to be Napoli’s priority target in midfield, followed by Basic and Thorsby.
