Napoli director Cristiano Giuntoli left the door open for Dries Mertens potentially signing a new contract and denies Bayern Munich offers for Victor Osimhen.

The director of sport spoke to fans and media at the Dimaro pre-season training camp this evening, covering several different topics.

He confirmed a new contract agreement has been reached with goalkeeper Alex Meret that “just needs to be signed, we are preparing the paperwork.”

Meanwhile, coach Luciano Spalletti listed Mertens in the players who have left Napoli this summer, but Giuntoli leaves some hope the club’s all-time top scorer could remain.

“As I said, Dries has a direct rapport with the President. We cannot know what will happen in future. He is a separate issue and cannot be compared to the other players.”

Mertens is now a free agent, as his contract was allowed to expire and Napoli did not take up their option to extend.

They are trying to get him to accept a new deal with a much lower salary, less than half the figure he had been on until June 30.

Giuntoli also commented on reports that Bayern Munich wanted Osimhen as the heir to Robert Lewandowski, who has been sold to Barcelona.

“We have not received any offers from Bayern, so I cannot comment on that.”
