Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis has revealed that he's offered Paolo Cannavaro a new contract and outlined what he's looking for in the January transfer window.

Cannavaro, the club captain, has been in talks for months regarding an extension given that his present deal expires in June.

The Neapolitan native has insisted that his priority is to remain with his hometown club and De Laurentiis has now made him a take it or leave it final offer.

"We saw each other last week and I offered him a four-year contract," the movie mogul noted on Monday.

"It is now up to him whether he takes the road of his heart or decides to choose another direction."

Turning to market matters, the San Paolo President confirmed that his club would look for a left-back after Christmas before a summer of heavier spending.

"We need a left-sided defender even if we know this isn't the window which allows you to take a step up in quality," he added. "We need to look after the books too.

"Then in June we need to sign a central defender, a midfielder and an attacker who are strong but young – players for the future."

Napoli are having a season to remember as Saturday's 1-0 win over Genoa saw them join Juventus and Lazio in second – six points behind leaders Milan.
