Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne has reportedly refused to take a pay cut amid reports linking him with a move to Barcelona.

The 30-year-old will see his contract with Napoli expire in June 2022 and hasn’t yet reached an agreement to extend his stay at the Stadio Maradona.

According to Calciomercato.com and Tuttosport, the Azzurri want to offer him a lower salary than his current €4.5m-a-year wages. A proposal that Insigne is not willing to accept.

Therefore, his future at Napoli seems to be in doubt as the Partenopei could see him walk away from the club as a free agent next year.

If Insigne fails to extend with Napoli, he could sign a pre-contract agreement with any other club from January 2022 and leave the Stadio Maradona for nothing at the end of the next season.

The Serie A giants faced a similar situation one year ago when Arek Milik refused to extend his contract with the club and was left out of the team until January when he eventually joined Marseille.

Meantime, according to Sportitalia, Barcelona have set their sights on the Italy international who reached double figures for goals (19) and assists (11) across all competitions with Napoli last term.
