Napoli goalkeeper Meret out with reoccurring back injury

Napoli have announced that goalkeeper Alex Meret fractured bones in his vertebrae in today’s training session.

The 24-year-old Italian shot stopper previously suffered from a lumbar vertebra fracture back in August of last year, which kept him sidelined for almost a month. The fact that he’s suffered the same injury again suggests a reoccurring issue for the Napoli number one.

As announced by Napoli, Meret suffered a fracture to the second lumbar vertebra near the end of the training match today. He has already taken medical tests at the Pineta Grande clinic and he’ll begin his recovery programme tomorrow.

The injury is known to be unusual in athletes and is usually caused by a high-impact trauma, such as a car crash or fall.

Meret has mostly lost his starting spot in the Napoli squad to David Ospina, making only four Serie A appearances all campaign. With his contract expiring in 2023, it’s still unclear whether or not he’ll sign a new deal with the club.
