The Partenopei were in another race against time to get the swabs done at midnight, because under the Italian protocol when the bubble has been breached, all players must provide a negative test on the same day of the match.

Koulibaly and Ghoulam both tested positive on Friday, but a statement confirms that all the other tests performed at midnight were negative.

Some have questioned why the ASL (local health authority) in Naples this time did not bar travel to Genoa after two cases emerged within the squad.

The reasoning given was that when travel was banned to Turin for the Juventus match in October, the two cases had occurred within days of playing Genoa.

So far in Italy, the only genuine outbreak has been at Genoa in early October, when between players and staff there were at least 15 cases simultaneously.

The ASL therefore feared that the same could happen at Napoli after playing against many of those who tested positive just hours later, so travelling for a game in Turin was too big a risk of creating a Serie A-wide outbreak.

Meanwhile, Napoli full-back Ghoulam has shot down rumours he and Koulibaly were infected during a birthday party.

“You should investigate before talking, I did not have a birthday party. I am not someone who particularly celebrates his birthday anyway, let alone at this moment,” wrote the full-back on Instagram.

It’s suggested the pair tested positive because they regularly drive to training together.
