A Napoli fan was reportedly attacked and beaten up by a group of Salernitana supporters following the Campania derby on Sunday.

The Partenopei had the chance to mathematically secure their first Scudetto in 33 years in their clash with the Granata, but they were held to a 1-1 draw after a late equaliser by Boulaye Dia, forcing them to wait until Wednesday or Thursday to possibly guarantee their league title.

The draw seriously dampened the mood at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and in the city of Napoli as a whole, with fans hoping to finally celebrate their Serie A success. They are expected to secure their Scudetto later this week.

As reported by Corriere dello Sport, a Napoli fan was attacked in Pontecagnano Faiano on Sunday after the Campania derby ended in a draw. The victim, who is a local politician, was attacked after some Salernitana supporters asked him to remove his Partenopei flag from his balcony.

Mayor Giuseppe Lanzara denounced the incident and sent his support to the victim, confirming that action would be taken to bring the suspects to justice.

“You start asking to remove the flags of a favourite team from a balcony and you end up beating people up, acting as a sick fan. These people are simply thugs, and it has to be said out loud, without fear.

“As mayor I firmly condemn these violent episodes, the forces of law and order will take action as soon as possible to bring these ‘stage men’ to justice. A big hug to Gianluca.”
