Napoli doctor Raffaele Canonico claims it’s ‘a miracle’ that Hirving Lozano didn’t damage his eye in a horrible collision with the Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper and reveals when Dries Mertens and Faouzi Ghoulam could return to action.

Earlier this month, Lozano was taken to the hospital during a Gold Cup game after a collision with the opposition goalkeeper’s knee.

“It’s a miracle he didn’t damage his eye. If the knee hit him five centimetres down, it would cause damage to his eye,” Canonico told Il Mattino.

“His injury is not worrying, he had the cut sutured and we are wait to see him again here to undergo tests related to head trauma he suffered.”

Dries Mertens underwent shoulder surgery after the Euros, while Ghoulam is recovering from a cruciate ligament injury.

“Mertens could not postpone the shoulder surgery as cases of shoulder dislocation had become too frequent,” the Napoli doctor claimed.

“It was the right decision, but now we need to wait a little bit. We expect him to return to action at the end of September.

“Ghoulam has not joined the team at Dimaro and is continuing his recovery from a knee injury in Naples.

“We don’t have the same equipment here at Dimaro, that’s why he is not with the team.

“Things are going the right way four months after his surgery and we believe he can be ready in October.”
