Napoli are once again reported as in discussions with representatives to Edinson Cavani over the prospect of the player signing a new deal.

Speculation has been strong this summer that one of a number of clubs are tracking the Uruguayan hitman, who has netted 49 goals in the last two Serie A seasons for the Vesuviani.

The Gazzetta dello Sport suggest in today’s edition that Jose Mourinho would like the striker at Real Madrid.

However, following on from Aurelio De Laurentiis’ rather sneeringly delivered declaration that the player will stay, and the player’s own words to the same effect, sporting director Riccardo Bigon has reportedly initiatied contract renewal talks today.

Il Mattino, who reported recently of this same intention, suggest that Bigon held long talks with Cavani’s agents, to reassure them of the club’s ambitions in light of Ezequiel Lavezzi’s sale and to offer improved terms on his current deal.

The 25-year-old earns €2.4m a year, which Napoli are reportedly prepared to boost to a minimum of €4m. This is seen as a compromise between the original €3m a year the club were offering and the €5m his agents were asking for.
