The centre-back joined the Partenopei last summer, but managed only three appearances due to a number of injury problems.

“He’ll stay at Napoli, in the spirit of a professional who signed a five-year contract last year,” Marco Sommella told Radio Crc.

“Unfortunately last year was disrupted by injuries and illness, this summer we imagined he could go to play elsewhere, not least to protect Napoli’s investment given they spent around €15m.

“It wasn’t just Sampdoria who asked for him, but four or five teams including two who are in Europe. Napoli didn’t want to lose him though, I don’t know the reasoning.

“He’ll play for a place among the starters, there will be a lot of commitments even if he’s not on the Champions League list.

“[Sporting director Cristiano] Giuntoli also sees him as a backup for [Elseid] Hysaj, Lorenzo isn’t as convinced by that and nor am I.”
