Victor Osimhen and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia were on target, but Napoli paid for defensive errors in a 3-2 friendly defeat to Villarreal.

Before kick-off at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, there was a gift for former Napoli players Pepe Reina and Raul Albiol, then a minute’s silence in honour of Sinisa Mihajlovic, who died yesterday at the age of 53.

Villarreal started strong and after a desperate Alex Meret block on Manu Morlanes, he was beaten by Etienne Capoue on the rebound from a poor clearance.

Osimhen equalised almost immediately, springing the offside trap to smash into the roof of the net.

Capoue tested Meret and also fired wide, while Mario Rui risked an own goal with his defensive block before Nicolas Jackson burst past Giovanni Di Lorenzo to drill into the top corner.

Villarreal extended their lead further moments later, as Diego Demme’s misplaced pass allowed Gerard Moreno to go clear on goal.

Kvaratskhelia pulled one back by converting a penalty, earned by Alessio Zerbin, and threatened to equalise with a good solo move.

Arnaut Danjuma also threatened at the other end by clipping the upright.
