Salvatore Bagni believes Napoli’s potential Scudetto win would be an even bigger feat than the titles won during the Diego Maradona era: ‘They’d be like Nottingham Forest.’
The Partenopei have had an amazing start to the season, with nine wins and two draws in 11 games across all competitions.
They are the only unbeaten team in Italy along with Atalanta and are the Champions League Group A leaders following three wins from three games.
Not many expected such a strong start from Luciano Spalletti’s men, considering that some of the best players had left in the summer, including Kalidou Koulibaly, captain Lorenzo Insigne and Fabian Ruiz.
“Big players left in the summer, decisive players. Usually, clubs make gradual changes, but this time, it all happened at the same time,” Bagni told Tuttosport newspaper.
“There were situations they could not solve. Napoli play amazing football, they are leaders in Serie A and in their Champions League group.”
Bagni is a former Italy international, won the Scudetto and a Coppa Italia at Napoli in 1986-87.
“If Napoli win the title, it would be a bigger feat than ours,” he admitted.
“Nobody on heart would have gambled on them at the beginning of the season. We understood we could have won the title after beating Juventus 3-1 away in November 1986.
“I could compare Napoli’s potential win to Nottingham Forest, who won the title the year after being promoted, triumphing in Europe as well.”
Does this mean that they can win the Champions League as well?
“Manchester City are devastating with Ering Haaland, but who knows? The Azzurri have already proved that they can play on par with anyone.”
Napoli beat Ajax 6-1 away on Tuesday and will visit Serie A strugglers Cremonese this coming Sunday at 17.00 UK time.
