Neapolitan newspaper Il Mattino claims Napoli have contacted Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez about a return to the club.

Contract talks with Coach Maurizio Sarri have been postponed until the end of the season, and there are growing fears that the former banker will move on this summer.

Following yesterday’s defeat to Fiorentina the Partenopei are four points behind Juventus with three games to play, and some have suggested this could be the end of a cycle for Sarri.

According to Il Mattino, President Aurelio De Laurentiis is already considering alternatives, with Marco Giampaolo top of the shortlist.

Lazio’s Simone Inzaghi is also of interest, while Unai Emery will be a free agent when he leaves Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season.

In addition though, the newspaper reports, De Laurentiis called former Coach Rafa Benitez, who left in 2015 to join Real Madrid.

The Spaniard is currently at Newcastle, and is aid to have been hugely surprised to receive the call.

Benitez didn’t say no to a return to Naples, but he also didn’t say yes, and the issues which he had when he left remain.

The tactician complained about the lack of a sports centre, the structure of the club and various other issues.

However, De Laurentiis considers Benitez the man who opened the current cycle, having brought in Jose Callejon, Raul Albiol, Pepe Reina and Gonzalo Higuain.

While the sporting director signs the players, it was only through Benitez’s Spanish contacts that Napoli were able to get such players.
