Napoli made a somewhat surprising statement this evening, publicly thanking Atalanta and Inter for their ‘entertaining and fairly contested game’ of football.

The final result at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo was 0-0 with chances for both sides, including big saves on Matteo Pessina, Luis Muriel, Arturo Vidal and Edin Dzeko.

After the match, Napoli released a statement on their Twitter account that was totally unexpected.

“The club would like to congratulate Atalanta and Inter on an entertaining and fairly contested game of football.”

While Venezia have gone viral in recent weeks for social media messages congratulating the opposition for their performances, this is rather different.

Napoli had no connection to the fixture in Bergamo, so were purely spectators and yet released a formal statement via their official Twitter account.

Napoli are in action on Monday against Bologna at the Stadio Dall’Ara at 17.30 GMT.

It is not clear if they will make similar statements in future to compliment teams on performances.

  1. Wow! Great sportsmanship! I wish this trend continues across the league instead of the constant nagging and complaining whenever Juve wins.
