Napoli are closing in on Lyon midfielder Maxime Gonalons and could seal the deal by Monday for €12m.

The clubs had already been in advanced negotiations in January with a move worth €15m plus add-ons collapsing at the very last minute.

President Jean-Michel Aulas had pulled the plug then, insisting Lyon needed their captain to see out the season.

This irritated Napoli, but the decision had come with the promise Gonalons would be allowed to leave in the summer if the situation remained the same.

Aulas has been holding off again and trying to raise the price-tag, but according to Sport Mediaset the financial problems at the French club will force him to sell.

Gonalons is expected to join Napoli on Monday for €12m plus add-ons, as Tuesday is July 1 and the start of a new financial year for Lyon.

“I am done talking to Aulas,” Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis said earlier this month.

“If he wants to sell, then he’s doing it under our terms or the player can just stay where he is.”
