The mayor of Naples says it’s “unthinkable” that Napoli could play games at the San Nicola, while Bari’s mayor says the stadium isn’t even UEFA compliant.

Partenopei President Aurelio De Laurentiis is in open war with the city council over the Stadio San Paolo, and claimed that he’s asked to play Champions League games in Bari.

The two cities are over 250km apart, but the film magnate owns both clubs and said he’d pay to put on buses for Neapolitan fans.

UEFA has insisted that they received no such request though, and the mayors of the two cities have cast further doubt upon the proposal.

“I won’t speak about De Laurentiis,” Luigi De Magistris, the mayor of Naples, told La Repubblica.

“It’s unthinkable that Napoli wouldn’t play at the San Paolo, and therefore it’ll never happen. This is pure imagination, Napoli will play at the San Paolo.”

Bari’s mayor Antonio Decaro chose De Laurentiis to lead the refounded team in the city, but he’s not on board with the idea either.

“I don’t know anything about De Laurentiis wanting to play Champions League matches in Bari,” he said on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“I’m used to the President’s unpredictability. I think a team should play in their own stadium in front of their own fans.

“Teams have to play in their own cities and, among other things, I don’t think the San Nicola is UEFA compliant, there were problems with the electrics.”
