Napoli players and staff have been saying goodbye to Jose Callejon, who has played his final game for the club after seven years.

The 33-year-old’s contract expired in June and he agreed to remain on until the end of their Champions League campaign, despite not taking a salary for that period.

It was his final parting gift to the club he first joined from Real Madrid in 2013.

Callejon leaves after 349 competitive games for Napoli, in which he scored 82 goals and provided 78 assists.

“We’ll miss him immensely. He’s given me so many assists over the years, as he has this way of running to the back post that gets the opposition defence caught out,” Dries Mertens told Sky Sport Italia after last night’s 3-1 defeat to Barcelona.

Lorenzo Insigne took to Instagram for a message of farewell, including pictures from their long time together at the Stadio San Paolo.

“Dearest Jose, unfortunately today we take different paths. It was an honour being by your side all these years,” wrote the captain.

“I was lucky enough to get to know a fantastic man, an incredible player, an exemplary professional. I’ll miss seeing you in the dressing room, our laughs and your fantastic run to the back post.

“I wish you and your fantastic family all the best. Good luck, my friend.”

According to Sky Sport Italia, Callejon did not travel back to Italy with the Napoli squad, remaining in Spain.
