Uruguay international Nahitan Nandez has sent a message apologising to Cagliari fans, but insisting he was ‘given their word’ that he could join Inter and wants it maintained.

The negotiations have been dragging on throughout the summer, with Radja Nainggolan in a similar position wanting to quit the Nerazzurri for a return to Sardinia on a permanent transfer.

Nandez returned late from his post-Copa America vacation and is reportedly training separately from the squad, refusing to take part in friendlies.

He therefore released a statement on his Instagram account to the Cagliari fans.

“Many things have been said over the last few days on my situation at the club. I know perfectly well what happened and immediately told my teammates so that they knew the situation, and they were the first to understand my position.

“You all know the respect and love I have for this jersey and this city. You welcomed me in the best possible way from my first arrival and never stopped supporting me. I will always be grateful to you for that.

“This is why I am writing to apologise to all the Cagliari fans in case they felt that I offended them. The last few hours have been very difficult for me and my intention is just to apologise because I might’ve made a decision that hurt you, but I want you to know that I had no alternatives.

“I was given their word and I want that promise to be maintained, the way I always have done on and off the field. Controversy is no good for anyone, nor does playing this game in the media.

“It was never my intention to lack respect to you fans, but you know how much passion and pride I put into defending this jersey in every moment, even when I had family problems.

“It has been a very tough year, with many personal difficulties and the only thing that I really care about right now is being clear with my teammates and fans, who always showed me their affection.

“Nahitan.”

  1. Another one with the apparent promise not being kept. What an embarrassment. Brought him to Europe, gave him the opportunity to shine and he has a contract for a further two seasons after this one. Let him rot on the bench. Yet another ungrateful cretin.

  2. 1. Players are not slaves.
    2. So clubs doing an absolute favor to players (only) by bringing them on, right? Like Charities.
    3. By your logic no player should move to another team.
    4. I’m against this kind of attitude in general. But if there is a promise/assurance, it needs to be kept (Assuming Nandez is telling the truth) end of story. Didn’t Real Madrid keep their promise in CR9 case?
    5. I have no doubt if you need to take a ladder for your progreess you wouldn’t think a sec to do that. Stop criticizing people when you are not in their shoes!
    6. Good luck keeping him on bench!
