Kostas Manolas and Edin Dzeko had given them an early lead in Baku, but a Maxime Gonalons error allowed Pedro Henrique to open the game and Ndlovu’s last-gasp header whistled just wide.

“The important thing was to win tonight. It wasn’t a great performance, but we bring home the three points, so we can be satisfied with that, at least,” the midfielder told Mediaset Premium after a 2-1 victory.

“I don’t know if it was the approach that was wrong, but we took the lead straight away, then 2-0 and went close to 3-0. We have to look each other in the eye and do better. The important thing today was the three points.

“Perhaps we thought that it’d be easy here and there are many elements we underestimated.”
