Radja Nainggolan says he’s “fine” at Roma, and discusses his difficult childhood.

The midfielder spoke to television in his native Belgium, with his words reported by this morning’s Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I’m fine at Roma, this is a great club,” Nainggolan assured, before discussing his estranged father.

“My father is a closed chapter. If I hadn’t been a footballer I wouldn’t invite him to my house. When I saw him again I didn’t feel anything. He’s a stranger.

“I only have bad memories of him, like the arguments in the house when I was little. Now he’s sought me out because I’m famous, but first I was just a lad who needed his father.

“I’m proud of what I’ve done in my life, my mother was fundamental for me. She worked to get us out of trouble when my father left, then died of cancer after fighting it for six months.

“The ball was my salvation.”
