Roma’s Radja Nainggolan has been banned from driving for a month and fined €1,600 after being charged with drink-driving.

Nieuwsblad reports the conviction relates to an incident that happened after Belgium’s 1-1 draw with Greece a year ago, when Nainggolan was pulled up in a rental car with his friend on their way home from a night club.

Although the pair admitted to being under the influence, the midfielder was quoted in his defence as saying: “I didn’t drive. The car stopped with a flat tire and I happened to be behind the wheel.”

This is not the first time the 29-year-old has been apprehended for poor conduct, with Roberto Martinez initially dropping him from the Belgium squad due to his smoking habit, before he was forced to apologise for posting a drunken Instagram video on New Year’s Eve.
