“En route towards Cagliari… Strange sensations…” wrote the Belgian on Twitter.

“Those four unforgettable years… There will be so many emotions… I will see many friends again…”

Nainggolan also spoke to AS Roma Membership and confessed this is going to be a tricky moment for him.

“It is going to be a tough game, as Cagliari care a great deal about facing Roma, for various reasons. They need points and cannot fail, while we need to win in order to keep our position in the table.

“In all honesty, I will get emotional when I step on to the field. I left so many friends there. I don’t know whether to expect jeers or applause, but the fans certainly know I always honoured the shirt.

“Perhaps some won’t like the fact I left in January when the side wasn’t in a great position. If I score? I wouldn’t celebrate.”

Nainggolan has proved his love for Cagliari since moving to Roma, as his shin pads are painted with the Quattro Mori symbol of the city.

“I am very happy here, as I became part of an exceptional group. My closest friends within the team are Mehdi Benatia and Alessandro Florenzi.”

The Belgium international made no secret that he wanted the move in order to earn his place at the World Cup.

“In all honesty, I think I deserve to be in Brazil. There are many players for few places, but I think we should be judged on performances and not just names. When I play, I always want to win.”
