Adrian Mutu has admitted that past mistakes may have cost him the chance to win the Golden Ball.
The Romanian has had a colourful career, one affected by off the field controversies which have seen him banned on two occasions for failing drug tests.
The now 32-year-old looked destined for greatness following his €22m move from Parma to Chelsea in August 2003, but things never quite worked out.

The now 32-year-old looked destined for greatness following his €22m move from Parma to Chelsea in August 2003, but things never quite worked out.
“It’s obvious that I should have made some different decisions in the past,” he told the Corriere dello Sport.
“Had I done that then I could have won the Golden Ball prize. However, it’s now time to think of the future and not dwell on the past.”
The forward, formerly of Inter and Juventus, is now playing for little Cesena following a five-year stint with Serie A giants Fiorentina.
“The Viola and their fans will always be in my heart,” he continued.
“I would have also have liked to join Roma, and play alongside Francesco Totti, in the past when they wanted me.
“However, I’m now at Cesena. It was hard to find my feet in this new reality, but I have been able to do that with time.
“I’m happy here and I’m just concentrating on survival with Cesena.”
Mutu, who scored twice against Genoa at the weekend, has netted three goals in nine Serie A games for the Seahorses.
