Mourinho’s use of substitutions under question

José Mourinho’s use of substitutions is under question as the Special One has picked just 22 players out of 31 so far in Serie A.

The former Tottenham and Manchester United coach is not happy about the squad’s depth and he made it clear after the Giallorossi’s 1-0 defeat against Juventus on Sunday.

Mourinho used only two of the possible five substitutions at the Allianz Stadium and when asked to explain his choice, he replied: “There are benches and benches in Serie A.

“Today we played with Karsdorp, who had been a doubt until the last moment and then we had Reynolds, Kumbulla and Calafiori.”

The Portuguese tactician has only used 22 of 31 players in Serie A so far this season.

Only Sampdoria and Udinese have used fewer players, with 20 each.

Mourinho heavily rotates his squad only during Conference League games.

Roma were the biggest spenders in Serie A last summer, having invested almost €100m in new signings.

The Giallorossi spent €97.7m to reinforce their team: only Arsenal, Manchester United, City, Chelsea and RB Leipzig invested more money in new players.
