The struggle at Roma continued with a 3-2 defeat to Venezia and rumours suggest Jose Mourinho is not on good terms with Tiago Pinto, but both parties deny any conflict.

The Giallorossi are sixth in Serie A with 19 points from 12 games, but have only won once in seven games across all competitions.

Roma were humiliated by Bodo/Glimt in Norway and Mourinho slammed the squad players after the embarrassing 6-1 defeat in the UEFA Europa Conference League last month.

But the woes have continued, as the only win came against bottom-placed Cagliari, and the coach has targeted the referees in recent weeks.

Mourinho turns on Roma and referees: ‘I have to protect myself’

He continued to do so after the defeat in Venice on Sunday, when claiming he couldn’t comment to protect himself.

“I have to protect myself here and keep my feelings to myself over what is happening,” Mourinho told Sky Sport Italia after the match.

“Maybe one day I will understand why certain incidents happen. There are things that stay hidden for years and one day I will understand them…”

Tiago Pinto had criticised the match officials after the match against Juventus, but said he was tired of talking about the referees after the 2-2 draw with Bodo/Glimt at the Olimpico last week.

But multiple reports in Italy claim the referees are not the only issue, as the tactician criticised the current players at the Giallorossi before a reported confrontation with the sporting director.

Mourinho openly admitted he is unhappy with the transfers business at the club and has continued to exclude several players from the team after the incident in Bodo.

“Until it becomes mathematically impossible, I want to keep saying fourth place is the target. Roma finished sixth or seventh the last few seasons, the club made an effort over the summer, but it was more reactive transfer activity than building,” he said after the defeat against Venezia.

“I don’t think this squad is stronger than last season. We lost a lot of experience, we had to bring in players to replace those who left, many of them lack experience at this level.

“As a coach with a three-year contract, this season can be a painful one for body and soul, but still a very, very important one for me to understand something I couldn’t have understood before I arrived. I already know more than I did two months ago.”

After the game in Norway, the coach made it crystal clear that he considers his team to have only 13 players and that the others are nowhere near at the right level.

Tiago Pinto: ‘Media creating confrontation with Mourinho’

Tiago Pinto reacted with anger when he was asked about their relationship and denied he has any issues with the former Inter coach.

Rumours have emerged regarding the rapport between the two compatriots, but Tiago Pinto claimed it’s the media that are ‘trying to create some confrontation between Mourinho and myself’.

Il Messaggero reported the Friedkins were not happy with the way Mourinho threw the players under the bus after the match in Norway.

The report claimed the owners expressed their disapproval of the method used and the words of Mourinho, because they would have preferred an internal confrontation before putting those who don’t fit into the plan in a bad light.

The rumours of an internal issue continue to emerge after a difficult time and the Giallorossi must use the international break well to bounce back when Serie A returns.

Roma travel to Genoa on November 21, before playing Zorya in the Conference League and Torino in Serie A the following two games this month.

Mourinho: ‘I over-estimated Roma players’

5 thought on “Mourinho unhappy with players and transfers at Roma”
  1. Old man yells at cloud.

Only a matter of time before he fell out with Pinto. The sack comes next for this new hyper-speed Jose.

  2. mourinho lose his touch long time ago. and he changed lots. friedkins should realize this when they hired him, the last few years on his career he embarrassed his players if they didnt play or did what he asked. he did that on 2nd stint on chelsea, MU, spurs, and now roma.
old mourinho never embarrassed his own players in front of media. he never embarrassed balotelli even though he lack discipline.
he finished as top tier coach, he refused to adept to more comprehensive tactical coaching, on the last few years many European coach and top league using more expansive tactical with or without the ball. and his team lack direction when attacking . he only whining when roma failed to score againts venezia and blaming his players who failed to scores instead he should have blaming his lack tactical direction when roma has ball.
    he is clown nowaday.

  3. blame players , check
    blame ref, check
    blame Juve, check
    blame mgmt, check
    We have a complete Mourinhio!!
telling again, Roma is wasting time with this clown, who was lucky to win what he won. He has not won anything big in since 2014. Just a prick who focues on creating controversies and spread hatered.

  4. so, did Roma management lie to him to get him on board? If not, why is he so suprised at the state of the club. It was brought forward as a long term project. I get that doesnt give him a pass to lose to lower sides.

  5. I am so tired of seeing these negative comments. Jose Mourinho just got there. Seems simple minded to expect him to have fixed a team that has been struggling for years, that has no depth in three months.Mourinho understands football and the psychology of competition and the disciple required to be a winner over a very long season. What ever is going on in football the knowledge of these factors is never lost.Being a great coach does not mean that you can do miracles, and you must have players that can execute. If a coach wins two or three trophies in fifteen years one could say that was luck but 25, I don’t think so.This man is a Great coach and manager, listen to most of his past players,
