Jose Mourinho claims Nicolò Zaniolo and Roma are treated differently by referees after the red card for dissent. ‘Do you think this happens to Inter, Juventus or Milan?’

Zaniolo was at the centre of attention during the 0-0 draw with Genoa, as he scored what would’ve been the 90th-minute winner only for it to be disallowed following an on-field VAR review of Tammy Abraham’s challenge on Johan Vasquez.

The Italian then continued his protests and was sent off for dissent moments later.

Serie A Highlights: Roma 0-0 Genoa

In his press conference, Mourinho continued to insist if the Abraham challenge was considered a foul, then football is a very different sport to the one he was accustomed to.

He also professed on DAZN that Roma don’t get the benefit of the doubt because they are “small in the eyes of the powerful” figures in Calcio.

“I spoke to the referee, because in my opinion he got it wrong,” added Mourinho in his press conference.

“Do you think if Zaniolo played for Inter, Juventus or Milan, the same situation would’ve developed? He hasn’t been given a penalty all season, he gets fouled constantly, he opens his mouth and is automatically booked. He’s had seven or eight yellow cards and two red, a creative player like Zaniolo.

“Today Zaniolo was sent off because he said three times to Mr Abisso: ‘Why the hell did you whistle?’ He said it three times in a row, but it was not an insult.

“If I am a referee, after someone celebrates at the 90th minute, sees the goal disallowed, is naturally frustrated, you can book him and that’s that.

“Do you think that red card would’ve been given, for example, to Lautaro Martinez for Inter at San Siro? Or Giorgio Chiellini in the Juventus Stadium? Or Zlatan Ibrahimovic at San Siro?

“What the hell did you whistle gets a red card. This is where we are, we are considered a small club. Maybe it’s not even his fault, maybe the referee is just following the guidelines he is given for modern football by the professors in charge.”

  1. Yeaaaaah it wasn’t Milan who scored legitimately just for referee taking it back and give it to the opposition practically robbing us 3 points. St-fu.

  2. Shinter maybe but don’t add Juve to that corrupt list.

Referees have been against Juve since 2006 because they don’t want to be seen as pro-Juve.

Every Juve goal is now reviewed by VAR while the ones scored against Juve are given immediately.

  3. He is the whiniest manager around, by far. His relevance is quickly fading and he is doing all he can to fight that.

  4. A lot of Mourinho haters here. He is speaking the truth whether you like it or not, Serie A is a joke. Modern football is a joke really, the amount of blatantly wrong calls that influence the result of the matches is absurd. No wonder why players are looking just to get paid, there is no incentive putting their bodies on the line just for the fate of a game to be sealed. There are 4 officials and VAR, yet nobody seems to get the call right! Seems fishy to me.

You might be right about Jose, but he’s not wrong about the game. That’s call was comically bad and the always questionable officiating is the main reason serie a will never grow globally.

  6. Jose loves to create alibis but in this case he is also protecting his star player as Zaniolo clearly has an anger management issue.

  7. all referees do their jobs to the best of their abilities. we cant criticize them just because things didnt go our way

  8. @ Mathew

Serie A is not a joke, Mourinho is.

He complained when he was in La Liga. Before matches even began. He attacked refs by name.

He would also wait for them in the parking lot to insult them and to moan and complain.

Even when he was coaching a huge club like Real Madrid.

He was the same in the PL and wherever he goes.

So this false sentiment that his Roma is getting bad calls because they’re a smaller club does not hold.
