“I am a professional,” he said. “If someday I had no team to manage and Inter turned me down or already had a good Coach, well…
“But Inter would always come first. In another Italian team I'd be working as a professional, with Inter I'd have passion and a deeper relationship with their history.
“I like to raise the level of my athletes and forge strong personalities. Inter already had players of a certain level, so my job became easier.
“When I was there, we set ourselves some objectives: the basic one was to keep dominating in Italy, but I knew that wasn't what I'd come to Milan for.
“But I knew that in our first year we weren't ready to win the Champions League, neither from a psychological nor from a tactical point of view.
“My work was made easier by the fantastic group of players I encountered. I left Inter in tears knowing that I reached the club's zenith.
“With [President Massimo] Moratti and with the staff we did something fantastic.”
