Jose Mourinho insists there is ‘no point crying’ about the growing Roma injury crisis, as they host Atalanta in a top of the table showdown.

It kicks off at 17.00 UK time (16.00 GMT).

Paulo Dybala pulled out in the warm-up with a left flexor issue in his thigh, so Nemanja Matic stepped into the starting XI, pushing Lorenzo Pellegrini into a more advanced role.

“The squad is in the best shape possible. We were fortunate really to play against 10 men for almost the whole game on Thursday, as that requires less intensity, pressing and running,” Mourinho told DAZN.

“Some played for 90 minutes against HJK, some hardly at all. It is always difficult against Atalanta, they are very good at playing their game and making it difficult for the opposition.”

Rick Karsdorp has to undergo surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee and is expected to be out of action for six weeks.

“It’s tough, but this is football, with the transfer window closed there’s no point crying about it now. We have Nicola Zalewski back, he can play on the right too.

“The season is made up of lots of little problems to deal with, the really big one was Wijnaldum, but Rick will be back in at most two months.”

Zaniolo gets his first Serie A start since dislocating his shoulder a month ago, having played against HJK Helsinki in the Europa League.

“Nico is in good shape and he’s a player really made to start games, he’s different to the others. In order to play against Atalanta, it’s important we unbalance them and he can do that.”
