La Gazzetta dello Sport reports talks between Roma and José Mourinho over a possible contract extension have begun, but the coach wants a new two-year deal and Newcastle are ‘fascinated’ by the Special One.

Mourinho’s current deal at the Stadio Olimpico expires at the end of the season and according to Gazzetta, negotiations between intermediaries have now started.

The report claims Mourinho has demanded a new two-year deal, while Roma seem willing to offer a one-year contract extension.

It is no secret most Giallorossi supporters want to see the Special One on their bench for a long time. This past Sunday, they put up a banner for Mourinho at the Stadio Olimpico, calling him a ‘Romanista for life.’

According to the report, the fans’ push and the recent results obtained by Mourinho have convinced the Friedkins to sound out the coach’s availability to extend his stay at the Stadio Olimpico.

Roma currently sit fourth in the Serie A table, level on 25 points with Bologna.

The report claims both parties are open to discussing a new deal, with Roma willing to confirm the coach’s salary, in the region of €7.5m per season.

Negotiations will continue over the next few weeks and talks could only collapse if Roma’s results worsen in the second part of the season and if a ‘big club knock on Mourinho’s door.’

Gazzetta mentions Real Madrid and Newcastle as two clubs who could be interested in the Special One. The Magpies are said to be particularly keen on the Portuguese tactician as club owners ‘are fascinated’ by the ex-Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United boss.
