Roma coach Jose Mourinho said he ‘feels more like a coach today’ than he did when he won the treble with Inter in 2009-10. ‘If a coach doesn’t improve, it’s because he has lost the passion’.

The Giallorossi are fourth in Serie A with 15 points from seven games under Mourinho, and went into the international break with back-to-back wins against Zorya in the UEFA Europa Conference League and Empoli in Serie A.

Mourinho has won the Champions League twice, with Inter and FC Porto, while he has picked up three Premier League titles, three La Liga trophies and two Scudetti during his career.

But the Portuguese tactician, who has been names the best coach in the world four times, believes he is even better in 2021-22.

“I feel more like a coach today than 10 or 20 years ago,” Mourinho told Esquire Italia. “If a coach doesn’t improve it’s because he has lost the passion and has lost the mentality that helps him improve every day.

“It’s not a job where age is fundamental or the physical shape. It’s the opposite of the player. The experience can only make you better. I only think about the next match.

“All the games I have played and all the trophies I have won, those are in my pocket, and I will have time to look at them when I’m done. Now, I only want to think about the next game.”

Mourinho replaced Paulo Fonseca at the Olimpico this summer and had a fantastic start to the season with Roma.

The Portuguese tactician admitted he would love to win with the Giallorossi and give something back to the passionate fans in the Italian capital.

“I want to give titles to the club, because a club lives on titles, the titles increase the passion of the fans,” Mourinho added. “I understood that the love for Roma goes beyond trophies, it’s an eternal passion.

“But the win is missing, and we are constructing a project to arrive. If we arrive with me, it would be perfect. If not, it will be beautiful to contribute to the construction of the future, everyone’s dream.”

Mourinho was asked about his favourite stadium in Italy and had to pick San Siro, due to the history he made with Inter in Milan.

“If I have to choose, I must say San Siro,” Mourinho continued. “That’s where I wrote history. At Roma it’s different, I live in the centre, that also helps me understand how special it is.”

  1. Shocking journalism by Football-Italia! Absolutely shocking. Can’t even be bothered to reason why.

  2. He feels more like a coach. That might be because he no longer has teams giving in to his ludicrous demands and literally buy a new team a season.
He actually has to coach players now and help them grow instead of buying world class players. Mainly due to the fact that no top player wanted to play for Spurs and Roma are hardly the glitz and glam of PGS.
See if he feels like a coach by the end of the season if he gets sacked again
