José Mourinho reveals Gianluca Mancini could play in midfield against Torino tomorrow as the Giallorossi are without three key players in the middle of the park.

Roma host Torino at the Stadio Olimpico at 17.00 UK time on Sunday.

“It is easy to understand that Torino defend well and with their own style,” Mourinho said at a press conference.

“They are a good example defensively and it is not easy. Looking at the numbers, they do not concede goals or opportunities. We will have to make a good offensive performance to score goals.”

Roma have Bryan Cristante and Gonzalo Villar positive for COVID, while Jordan Veretout is suspended.

“The situation in defence has improved, but with Cristante and Villar positive for COVID, so the problem is now in midfield. We are missing three players, two are regular starters and one is a quality option,” Mourinho said.

Given the emergency in midfield, the former Inter coach reveals Gianluca Mancini could play in centre midfield tomorrow.

“It could be, also because four centre-backs are available,” the Special One said.

“Somebody will sacrifice if it’s required. Ibanez has already played at left-back. If Mancini has to play in midfield, he’ll do it.

“There are impossible things to do, like to play Zaniolo as a full-back or Vina as a striker.

“But there are players like Mkhitaryan, Mancini and Ibanez who are versatile. It’s important to have these players in the team.”

The Stadio Olimpico will likely be sold out tomorrow and Mourinho is impressed with the commitment of Roma fans.

“I knew the passion and love for the team,” he said. “They haven’t only seen victories, but also defeats and bad performances, but they still come to the stadium to watch a team that plays for them.

“That’s what creates empathy and cohesion. It will be a pleasure to face Torino and Inter with this atmosphere.”
