José Mourinho admits he could switch to a four-man defence this season and explains where his players can improve.
Roma begin the new season away at Salernitana tomorrow, and Mourinho spoke to the media for the first time in three months.
The Special One was asked whether he’ll change Roma’s tactical system this season and seemed open to the idea.
“We have to work on a four-man defence. Last season we mostly played with three defenders. Our wing-backs feel more at ease playing with a three-man defence,” he said.
“This summer we’ve signed different players and we can play with four defenders. We need to work hard for this change, we can’t ask for money and buy players like English clubs and some Italian clubs do. Sometimes you have to kill off the game because a minimum advantage means an open game.
“We have a good potential and players who can manage the ball. We don’t want to repeat situations like last season against Juventus. We want to dominate games.”
Mourinho refers to a 4-3 loss at home this past January, when the Giallorossi wasted a two-goal lead, conceding three goals in seven minutes and missing a late penalty through Lorenzo Pellegrini.
During his pre-match press conference, Mourinho denied that Roma are title favourites and insisted that the Giallorossi need more new signings for a ‘season without fear.’
