Mourinho expects more new signings at Roma: ‘We’re not title favourites’

José Mourinho notes only Sampdoria and Lecce have spent less than Roma in Serie A this summer and insists the Giallorossi are not title favourites.

The Giallorossi begin their campaign away at Salernitana tomorrow. They have signed some exciting players such as Paulo Dybala, Georginio Wijnaldum and Nemanja Matic this summer, but the Special One is hungry for more.

“Unfortunately, the market is not over,” he said at a press conference.

It was Mourinho’s first meeting with the media in three months. The Portuguese coach hadn’t talked to reporters after Roma’s pre-season friendlies.

“We’ll play three or four games before the end of the transfer window. It’s too easy to judge our transfers, it’s better to wait,” he continued.

“It’s clear that we signed five players for €7m and it’s clear that we’ve done really well.

“The market is open for everyone, we lost two strong players such as Mkhitaryan and Veretout and we signed five outfield players plus an excellent young goalkeeper.

“I’ve given the green light to sign these players, I am on good terms with the club, so I am not frustrated. They [club directors] must be praised for what they did with these five players, but for a season without fear, we’ll need something more.”

Many see the Giallorossi as credible candidates for the title and there is enthusiasm in Rome following last season’s triumph in the Conference League.

“Usually, the second season brings more awareness. Usually, for we coaches, there are conditions to improve in the second season,” Mourinho admitted.

However, the ex-Manchester United and Tottenham boss doesn’t see his team as title favourites, given that every other Serie A club has also brought in reinforcements.

“We must win the Europa League if we want to improve in Europe, but there are clubs with a different economic power that can spend €100-150m every season. We have improved the team by signing new players, but the others have done the same. That’s why I didn’t need to talk in this period.

“Only Sampdoria and Lecce have spent less than us, so we can talk about Roma favourite [for the Scudetto] only if there are 18 titles available.

Milan and Inter have improved their teams and I don’t think Roma are the favourite to win the title. Lazio have spent €39m.

“We have our project and we can’t afford big investments. Time is crucial.”

What does he expect against Salernitana?

“We must praise the coach because he did something epic last season. I expect a lot of emotion, the truth is that we have been working for two months for the next ten months. The pitch is difficult, they spent €40m and have become really strong. I know it will be a very difficult game.”

The Giallorossi finished sixth in Serie A next season and Mourinho will be looking to get a Champions League spot this term.

  1. Yes .mourino is good. But the Roma owners should listen to him and support him. Otherwise they will not be happy to work with a frustrated mourino.
