Jose Mourinho and Roma refused to speak to the media following a 2-1 defeat to Fiorentina that rules them out of the running for a top four finish in Serie A.

It had been a strong first half performance at the Stadio Franchi for the Giallorossi, who took the lead through Stephan El Shaarawy and had numerous chances to increase their advantage denied by goalkeeper Michele Cerofolini and a Lucas Martinez Quarta goal-line clearance.

However, the Viola kept pushing and increased the quality with substitutions just days after losing the Coppa Italia Final to Inter, turning it around in a three-minute spell with Luka Jovic and Jonathan Ikone.

This result means Roma now cannot qualify for the Champions League via Serie A, so their only hope is to beat Sevilla in the Europa League Final on May 31 and win that trophy.

It would also ensure five Serie A teams in the tournament, as the top four and the Europa League winners enter the group phase.

There was more bad news, as El Shaarawy went off at half-time, reportedly due to a muscular issue.

Mourinho also received a yellow card for dissent and will be suspended for the final Serie A game of the season against Spezia.

It is believed the order came directly from Mourinho not to communicate with the media, hoping to keep everyone focused on the upcoming Europa League Final with Sevilla on May 31.
