Roma vs. Juventus this evening will also see a reunion between Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba, whose relationship broke down spectacularly at Manchester United.

It kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 19.45 GMT.

Pogba finally made his first appearance of the season in Tuesday’s 4-2 Derby della Mole win over city rivals Torino, having picked up a knee injury in July that required months of treatment, surgery and then muscular relapses as he tried to regain fitness.

It means he should at least come off the bench tonight against Mourinho’s Roma, bringing back memories of how their rapport deteriorated into a bitter feud.

Mou was the coach who brought Pogba back to Manchester United in the summer of 2016 and together they won the Europa League in May 2017.

The France international was made captain for the start of the 2018-19 season, but within weeks it had been stripped from him, with Mourinho declaring he’d never again wear the armband under his tenure.

A training ground row proved the turning point in September 2018, Mou accusing Pogba of joking around and jogging rather than getting to work, and a testy exchange during the match against Tottenham Hotspur.

The midfielder was dropped from the starting XI against Sevilla in the Champions League, as well as other big matches, but it was Mourinho who was sacked in December 2018.

Pogba took the opportunity to launch a broadside against Mou after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over.

“What I have now with Ole is different, he wouldn’t go against the players. Maybe Ole wouldn’t pick them, but it’s not like he puts them on the side like they don’t exist anymore. That’s the difference between Mourinho and Ole.

“Once I had a great relationship with Mourinho, everybody saw that, and the next day you don’t know what happened. That’s the strange thing I had with Mourinho and I cannot even explain to you because even I don’t know.”
