A cause of death for footballer Piermario Morosini, who passed away whilst playing for Livorno in April, has now been determined.

The 25-year-old midfielder collapsed and died during the first half of his side’s Serie B match with Pescara. Medical staff tried to resuscitate the much-loved player, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital that Saturday afternoon.

Confusion initially surrounded the cause of death, with nothing determined outright before his burial. However, a public prosecutor in Pescara recently ordered another autopsy so as to determine a final cause, with the report’s findings picked up today by news agency ANSA.

It is now understood that Morosini’s death was likely the result of a rare congenital heart condition, arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy. This is the same condition that claimed the life of Sevilla defender Antonio Puerta in August 2007.
