Italian tactician Francesco Moriero has been appointed as the new coach of the Maldives football team. ‘I had some offers from Lega Pro.’

The 52-year-old was a Serie A player for Lecce, Cagliari, Roma, Milan, Napoli and Inter.

As a coach, he had worked with the likes of Crotone, Frosinone, Grosseto, Sambenedettese and most recently Albanian side Dinamo Tirane.

“I had been thinking for a year-and-a-half that I wanted an experience abroad, because I wanted to try something outside of Italy,” Moriero told Calciomercato.com.

“Former Fiorentina striker Nuno Gomez knew I was seeking new adventures and told me this was a possibility. Negotiations went on for a few months and we reached an agreement.”

It wasn’t much competition for Moriero, because he chose the Maldives rather than proposals from Lega Pro clubs – the third division in Italy.

“I had something from the Lega Pro, but was disappointed by Italian football and those who run it. We coaches always get judged on the short-term, whereas we are more appreciated when working abroad.”
