The alarm over growing Coronavirus cases in Italy has seen 42 games called off this weekend, including Serie C match Piacenza-Sambenedettese and Serie D fixtures.

A press conference this morning stated there are at least 25 cases of contagion in the Lombardy and Veneto regions, with two victims having already died.

Because one of those in critical but stable condition is a 38-year-old amateur football player for Codogno, there are fears he might’ve infected teammates or even opponents.

So far, all amateur league games have been suspended in the Lombardy region, but it has now spread to Serie C (the third professional division) with Piacenza-Sambenedettese called off.

There are several semi-professional Serie D fixtures cancelled, including Mantova-Fanfulla, Progresso-Carpaneto and Crema-Forli.

Several youth team matches have also been abandoned, such as Prato-Fiorenzuola and Caravaggio-Crema.

“If there are competitions where there are confirmed cases, then sport cannot take place there,” insisted CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) President Giovanni Malagò.

It’s not just football, as several basketball and volleyball tournaments have also been suspended in these regions.
