Former Inter President Massimo Moratti admits he ‘would’ve liked to see Dries Mertens alongside Romelu Lukaku’ at San Siro, just as he’d tried to sign Marek Hamsik.
Mertens had been very close to agreeing terms with the Nerazzurri, but a couple of weeks ago found the breakthrough to extend his contract at the Stadio San Paolo.
“I would’ve liked to see Mertens at Inter, as I think he’d have been the ideal partner for Romelu Lukaku,” Moratti told Radio Kiss Kiss.

The pair already play together for Belgium and could’ve been reunited at club level.
“Aurelio De Laurentiis once again did very well to defend his players from the interest of other clubs. I had wanted Hamsik, even back when he was still playing for Brescia. I spoke to De Laurentiis, but was told he wasn’t for sale.”
Inter are currently in negotiations with Barcelona, as Lautaro Martinez has a release clause worth €111m, but the Blaugrana are asking for a discount.
“I don’t know what will happen with Lautaro, but I do get the feeling the matter is coming to a head.”
