Massimo Moratti would love to see Lorenzo Insigne at Inter, but admits he made mistakes due to excessive love after the Treble triumph.
The former Nerazzurri patron has always been a fan of Insigne and would love to see the Italy international continue his Serie A career at San Siro.
Insigne has not yet agreed a new contract, as Napoli only offered half his current salary, and his deal is due to expire in June 2022.
“Insigne would fit in well for any team, although it’s a pity that so far for Italy he has been unable to show what he can really do,” Moratti told Il Mattino newspaper.
“Considering his contract is running down, he wouldn’t even cost a crazy amount.”
The captain is the only homegrown player at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, but that might not be enough to keep him there.
“That’s football now. My father (Inter legend Angelo Moratti) didn’t want to lose the players he loved the most. When he realised it had to be done, he preferred to leave Inter.
“I understand that, because after we won the Treble in 2010, I should’ve released some players, but it would’ve felt unfair and a total lack of recognition for what they had achieved.
“Plus, as Juventus are showing now, it’s not so easy to reconstruct a team that had won.”
Moratti has never denied he ran Inter more as a fan than a President in charge of a business.
“I wish I’d understood that more in my day.”
