Massimo Moratti feels Inter should have won the Serie A title 25 times and believes Nicolò Barella is this season’s outstanding player for the Nerazzurri.
Inter became Serie A champions for the 20th time in history on Monday after a 2-1 win over city rivals Milan at San Siro.
Milan Ultras argued that Inter won 19 titles, not 20, given that the one in 2006 was given to the Nerazzurri after Juventus’ relegation to Serie B and the Calciopoli scandal.
However, Moratti offers an even different view.
“Without all that happened, we would have had 25 already,” the former club President told Gazzetta.
“The derby is always a special match, and in the first leg, we learned that if Inter play how they know, opponents can do little.”
Moratti enjoyed that Inter obtained a second star before the Rossoneri.
“This really is a nice thing,” he admitted.
“A very positive thing at the end of a dominated season. We must accept the Champions League disappointment; it’s a cruel competition where you can be eliminated for nothing. Think about Man City. They attacked for 120 minutes against Real Madrid, and in the end, they were eliminated.”
Who is the most representative Inter player this season? Lautaro Martinez may be the Nerazzurri leading scorer, but Moratti’s candidate is different.
“Barella. Perhaps it’s because he’s the first one that comes to mind because he is everywhere on the pitch,” he explained.
“But it truly belongs to everyone. Dimarco embodies Inter, Calhanoglu and Mkhitaryan have had an excellent season. Lautaro is a force of nature.”
Moratti won five Serie A titles as an Inter President. He was also at the helm when the Nerazzurri won a legendary treble under José Mourinho in 2010, the last time a Serie A club won the Champions League.
Forgoe the statute of limitations and see how many titles you have then.
