Former Inter president Massimo Moratti insisted that the club have earnt 20 Scudetti on the pitch following criticisms related to Calciopoli, highlighting how Juventus and Milan ‘cheated’.

The Nerazzurri recently secured the 2023-24 Scudetto after beating Milan in the Derby della Madonnina last week, earning the club the second star on their shirts, an important honour in Italian football.

Some rival fans, particularly those from Juventus and Milan, have suggested that Inter haven’t really earnt the right to wear the second star, considering that one of their titles was awarded during the Calciopoli scandal, when they finished third on 76 points behind Milan (88 points) and Juventus (91 points).

Moratti insistent

Speaking to Radio Radio via Calciomercato.com, Moratti first praised current Inter president Steven Zhang.

“He did what he had to do in the difficulties he found himself in. He has all the merits, one will say Zhang’s Inter. Inter are the only ones that still have a family upstream, even if helped by the funds.”

He had high praise for Simone Inzaghi.

“He worked a miracle. A character who as Inter coach was seen by everyone as not up to the task, and instead he improved and was very good. He improved the team’s play and mentality. Now he is a complete coach.”

Moratti highlighted the importance of various backroom staff members like Piero Ausilio as well as the playing squad.

“Everyone has a role, I believe they gave their best. The choices were made well, the team are there, and it seems to me that they have a lot of merit.”

Finally, Moratti was asked about the accusation that Inter have only won 19 Scudetti on the pitch.

“I don’t agree, 20 is 20. The leading teams had cheated. I don’t understand why we have to have this mentality that bails out the smart ones.”
